About reading assessments

What happens during an assessment?
You tap through adaptive flashcards together on screen, marking each word as your child reads it. The words get easier or harder based on the last answer, so the whole check takes about 3 minutes and covers patterns from PhonoLogic's 8 reading levels, which progress from basic CVC words through advanced multi-syllable patterns.

How does PhonoLogic determine the reading level?
Based on your child's word ratings across the flashcards, we identify which phonics patterns they've mastered and which need more practice. The system looks at accuracy across different pattern types (consonant blends, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, and more) to place your child at the appropriate level and recommend specific focus areas.

How often should we assess?
About every 4 weeks is ideal. More frequent assessments may not show meaningful progress, while waiting too long could mean practicing skills they've already mastered.

What do the results mean?
Mastered patterns are phonics skills your child reads accurately and confidently. Focus areas are patterns where they showed hesitation or errors, and these will be prioritized in their personalized stories.

Can I retake an assessment?
Yes. Each assessment is saved to your history, allowing you to track progress over time. The most recent assessment determines your current learning plan, but you can always start a new assessment if circumstances have changed.
